At the Bay Area Community Counseling, we work collaboratively with psychiatrists, medical doctors, tutors, school counselors, and others, to help create a supportive team to treat ADHD. Our Bay Area practitioners help our clients become successful in managing all aspects of life. ADHD can make you feel out of control - we use proven methods to get you back in control.
Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder affects our individual well being, our relationships with friends, partners, and families as well as our work and school life.
Assessment - We assess and diagnose ADHD in a few sessions and provide tailored treatment recommendations and referrals. We can also provide more extensive psychological assessments to understand you or your family members' strengths and weaknesses.
Individual Treatment - When working with children and adults with ADHD, we facilitate the learning of skills that decrease distraction, regulate emotional reactions and impulsivity, and increase organization. We also address the secondary issues to ADHD, such as low self-esteem, drug and/or alcohol abuse, shame, depression, anxiety, and/or trauma. We work closely with psychiatrists and physicians who prescribe medication in conjunction with these treatments.
Couples/Family Therapy - Having a child with ADHD or being in a relationship with someone with ADHD can present many challenges. ADHD often causes impulsivity, distraction, and disorganization; the illness can have a tangible impact on those around it. At times it can cause us to feel helpless in understanding or helping our loved ones. At the Institute, we collaborate with family members or caretakers to develop an approach that addresses problem behaviors. Addressing these behaviors can lead to increasing closeness in your relationships. We also provide couples therapy to help partners understand the effect ADHD has on their relationship, and cope with the illness's symptoms.
Work/School Functioning - Work and school are where most people with ADHD discover the impact of the illness's effects. We focus on teaching skills that are effective in the work environment. We work with teachers, tutors, and school staff to get the necessary accommodations. Together, we will develop a strategy for encouraging success and combating symptoms.
